In the Vedic literature, it
states that the soul of God (Brahman) appears as Atma (soul) in
the individual body of a person.
Over many live times of Brahman-Atma
experience the layers (kosas) over the reality with the self and its limitation
created a false reality. In the Vedanta,
the kosas are considered as the layers, like of an onion with the reality of Atma
buried in the center of the onion, so that by peeling away the layers of kosas
with devotion, which merging with the central core, Atma will results in its
true liberation.
The outside layer is
related to materialism; the second layer is Prana the breath of life energy;
the third layer is related to the mind; the fourth layer is wisdom; and the
fifth layer is the bliss of Atma.
Finally, when the fifth sheath is peeled away,
the reality of the core Atma remains merging with the supreme soul Brahman.
This provides an excellent
spectrum of life with the ultimate goal,
to realize the soul as the
true part of God.
