And it is this zone of
safety that most of us are seeking, the desire to be safe, to be secure, that
puts us to the dullness of not being awake.
Circumstances, words, a
gesture or an experience may awaken us and disturb us, but we want to be put to
back sleep again.
This is happening to most
of us all the time and it is not an awakened state. It is the desire to be undisturbed that must
be understood.
Desire takes many forms and
is the urge to escape from what is.
When this urge drops away -
but not through any form of compulsion, either conscious or unconscious -then
only does the convenience and the pain of discontent is able to disappear.
Freedom from desires comes
not through the conflict of the opposite, but with the understanding of what
is.
As long as the mind and its
desire is seeking to change itself from one to something else all changes are superficial
and trivial, and the full significance of this fact must be felt and understood.
